Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Sixth grade is a year full of transitions physically, emotionally, and academically. My 6th graders are a bundle of contradictions. One second they cannot live without you and the next they can push you away. It is a year where classroom engagement can disappear. My 6th graders are in Middle School which brings about many new challenges in itself. The middle school is located in a rural area outside of the city. Most kids are on free or reduced lunch. They come from a multitude of background, ethnicity and needs. The community is lower to middle class and families move out here because housing is a little cheaper. In any given class I will have between 25 - 38 students totaling 110 on my overall roster. Students have a wide range of abilities. The school values inclusion and some student in my class have some very special needs. Many of my students are from different countries and struggle with learning English. Many of my students are on medication for behavior issues, while others are learning coping strategies. Regardless of where they come from, they have one thing in common... they need 21st Century learning in a fun and engaging way.

My Project

Holding the Rubik's Cube, twisting and turning the parts, can help children of all ages grasp important math concepts including area, perimeter, volume, angles, algorithms and enumeration, among many other geometry and algebraic topics. Some teachers are even using the Rubik's Cube to teach life lessons and 21st century skills such as focus, following directions, memorization, sequencing, problem solving, critical thinking, and perseverance.

Those fortunate enough to solve the cube say this magical puzzle has increased their self-esteem, made them feel smarter and more willing to take risks, helped them overcome their fear of failure and even made them more outgoing.

With the help of the "You CAN Do the Rubik's Cube!" curriculum, the objective is to not only share the secrets of solving the Rubik's Cube with young people, but to also encourage them to help others to do the same.

The lessons are set, but now my students need to have cubes of varying skill levels accessible to them to use in our classroom. This project will provide all of the cubes and supplies needed to implement a Rubik's Cube curriculum in middle school.
