Rube Goldberg Can Help Us Learn About Gears for PLTW-AR

My students need games to learn about Rube Goldberg machines and gear mechanisms to create background knowledge for PLTW Automation and Robotics lessons.

My Students

My students are in their first year of middle school. They are eager and excited for all things science. Our Project Lead the Way curriculum provides students many opportunities to solve real-world problems that exist today and may exist in the future. This is an introduction to careers in science, technology and engineering. In order to create the best possible learning environment for my students, I begin with helping them to develop a growth mindset. This enables them to persevere as they learn from failure since all of their solutions are innovative and new.

My Project

My Project Lead the Way students will learn how to build gear mechanisms with their VEX materials and then program them to create automated gears using RobotC. But first, I'd like to provide them with a connection to childhood games like Mouse Trap and building with Legos so that they can see the fun in what they are about to do!

Rube Goldberg kits, Mouse Trap board games, Keva contraption blocks and other gear mechanism materials will help students to make a real-world connection to what they are learning in Project Lead the Way.

The addition of these materials in my classroom will bridge the gap between background knowledge and new neural pathways for engineering. Students will be able to make connections to the real-world after they see the relevance of engineering in their lives.
