I have the pleasure of teaching 22 intelligent, energetic, and interactive Kindergartens. My students are primarily low-income, English Language Learners in an urban area of Portland Oregon, many of who enter the classroom with few readiness skills or opportunities to build things with their hands.
My students are active learners, who are at their best when they are learning though discovery and play.
They come to school each day eager to be in a safe, loving, and friendly environment. They understand that I believe in their potential to grow as learners and build positive relationships with peers.
My Project
I'm requesting hands-on activities such as Giant Place Value blocks or Lace-A-Word beads to fill our classroom exploring tubs. These tubs are engaging for all students as they practice skills at their ability level. Items placed in the tubs build fine motor, reading and math skills. It is a wonderful way to add play back into the classroom while students are learning at the same time. For example the Lincoln Logs can be used for counting or addition while students are building with the pieces. The Learning Resources Letters will be a wonderful way for students to use their creative minds while learning the alphabet.
Explore tubs are a tool to promote active hands on learning.
We will be using explorer tubs to not only teach academic skills but also important life skills like sharing, taking turns, and resolving disputes. Many of the tubs are designed for students to play together, take turns, and communicate in a positive way.
