My Students

Our first grade classes are a hum of busy, hard workers. We are beginning a "walk to read" model of learning, where each morning, students will walk to the first grade teacher who will meet the reading needs of those students. The levels will be just right for each student to succeed.

Sanislo Elementary is an open concept school where students are excited to learn.

Teachers know the names and faces of nearly all the students--even those we don't teach. Our school motto is, "The small school with BIG ideas," and we teach and learn those big ideas daily. Most of our students are from low socioeconomic backgrounds and many come from homes where there aren't many books. Adding quality books to our classroom libraries will make a positive impact on both the quality and quantity of literature we can use for our teaching.

My Project

Each primary teacher has a library of leveled books that students can choose from during the day. Books at the students' "just right" level are perfect for silent, partner and group reading and will be used throughout the day. Students are able to feel successful when they can read the words in these simple texts. Once they are able to master a level, they "graduate" to the next level with pride.

Research shows that the more books children read, the better they are able to read.

Many of our lower leveled book bins need to be supplemented in order to keep the libraries current and varied. Donated books are vital to keep our libraries fresh and interesting. We currently have only a dozen or so books in the primary sets, so additional books would bring a welcome variety to our reading program.
