My Students
I teach at a small urban school in San Francisco. Students come from areas of the city with high rates of poverty and trauma. We work to create a school where students are excited and feel safe to learn. This happens by creating an inviting and engaging classroom.
I believe that students create independent learning skills by being in control of their learning space.
Students become aware of their cognitive strengths. These skills will support them through the rest of their learning lives.
My Project
In my years as a new teacher, I have experimented with flexible seating. Students do not have assigned seats and are free to find spaces that work best for the task at hand. I’ve noticed students forming groups around smaller desk spaces without room for their materials. These larger round tables will facilitate these groups and encourage inter-student collaboration.
Many of my students are still learning how to form relationships and share their thinking with others, and having round tables would support these social skills.
Having a table top easel will support our small group work in the classroom. I will use this to share the small group teaching point during guided reading, English language development, math, and writing.
