My Students
I teach second grade in a small rural town in NC. Each year, my class is typically comprised of twenty plus students who all come from very different backgrounds. Each of my students use their varying diversities, socio-economic statuses, and mental/social/physical abilities to build a classroom community that supports and encourages one another to do their personal best.
In our classroom, we work hard each year to meet the demands of a fast-paced curriculum while still trying to accommodate for fun and engaging activities in our classroom.
My Project
As an elementary school teacher, my biggest job is teaching students how to read. Reading and the skills that accompany it are a HUGE part of a student's life, both in and out of school. Because of it's importance, finding books my students will LOVE is imperative to opening the doors of interest in books. I recently stumbled across a new reading curriculum called "Rooted in Reading" that uses high-interest literature books to teach the reading skills students need in the 21st century. In order to carry out this curriculum, I need help getting the mentor texts for my students.
Rooted in Reading is a curriculum that takes reading to a whole new level for students!
With Rooted in Reading, students aren't just sitting reading a story from a textbook. They are interacting with the story through the use of discussions, interactive notebooks, art projects, story writing, and various small group activities. This is how reading should be done. This is the way to show students that reading can be fun and can open their imaginations to a world of possibilities!
