Rooted in Reading Resources

Help me give my students a diverse and engaging collection of authentic fiction and nonfiction titles to use with the Rooted in Reading structure literacy program.

My Project

I teach 7 and 8 year old students in a rural, low-income school district. Many of the children we teach were not fortunate to have spent their earliest years being read to, where strong readers are made. That lack of exposure to rich vocabulary, characters and situations creates a deficit in their background knowledge of the world. By the time these underexposed students get to me in 2nd grade they are significantly behind their peers who have spent their first years immersed in all those prereading experiences and then building skills they need to make them thrive in a literate world.

This year we are supplementing our HMH reading curriculum with the "Rooted in Reading" structured reading program.

"Rooted in Reading" aligns with the most current research, 'the Science of Reading'. RiR requires these specific 40 engaging, authentic titles to use during explicit whole-class instruction. Through repeated exposure to one title throughout each week, students build their phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and writing skills.

Second grade is an interesting 'bridging year.' Most students are starting to more firmly grasp all the phonetic skills necessary to read fluently and are starting to take deeper dives into more vivid literature. They're getting closer to 3rd grade when reading instruction shifts from 'learning to read' to 'reading to learn'. The RiR program uses the fiction and nonfiction books on my list to explicitly teach kids the reading skills they need to be proficient readers.
