I teach 210 amazing third, and fourth grade girls on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Many of my students are English language learners and children with special needs. Most qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. All of my students are creative, thoughtful, and eager learners, and much of their scientific knowledge this year will come from inquiry and research. It has been so exciting to see them fully engaged, each day, as they learn through collaboration and exploration with their peers.
My Project
I know an iRobot Roomba might seem like an odd request, but for my students, it's a necessary one! In the words of one of my students’ favorite scientists, Ms. Frizzle, “Take chances, make mistakes, and get MESSY!”
My scientists are lucky to have the opportunity to explore and engineer with a variety of materials that sometimes get very messy!
Their favorite and most engaging labs are usually not the neatest! I want students to be able to work on their favorite labs, without having to cut the time short so there’s time for cleanup. Not to mention, there is a great necessity of a quick vacuum sweep after using sand, salt, flour, etc.
Our amazing custodians work so hard in keeping our campus and classrooms clean. Having the iRobot Roomba would relieve them of having to squeeze in an extra room on days that get especially dirty. Furthermore, it will help encourage student responsibility in keeping our lab a clean place to be.
