This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the first time in many of their lives, my students are realizing the connection between caring for their bodies and minds, making healthy decisions around parenthood, and achieving their dreams as newcomers to America.

100% of my students are English Language Learners (ELL) 11th grade students.

They all are newcomers (newly arrived immigrants to the U.S.), coming from every part of the globe seeking a new life of opportunity in our country. In addition to having to quickly learn the English language, adjusting to the social and cultural norms of American teens can be confusing and challenging. This is especially true around adolescent health issues and sexuality. Stress, having to work to support and be a translator for their families, caring for younger siblings or elders in their home -- all while entering an unfamiliar school system -- can impact many aspects of their health and their lives. What strikes me most about my hardworking students is that they hold close to them the hope that education will enable them to reach their full potential and become productive, informed, and healthy adults who "give back" to others in the U.S. and around the world.

My Project

My class proudly provides Comprehensive Health Education to an incredibly diverse group of young adults - teens from all over the world, with different values and different cultural and religious beliefs about parenting. This proposal is for a "refill" of the exercise equipment and "Ready or Not Tots" that joined our classroom earlier this year. They were so popular and engaging to my 90+ students that they put into practice seated physical movement during our daily classes. I've seen firsthand how using the equipment has helped them battle physical and emotional stress, and increased their intellectual focus. In addition, the "Tots" will join the two original ones we already have but need to increase to meet student demand! Girls, as well as many boys, are asking to participate in the "Weekend Parenting Project", which requires students to take on parenting responsibilities for three days, and to reflect on the impact that being a teen parent would have on their lives.

Hands-on activities using the exercise equipment and the "Ready or Not Tots" will provide life-changing experiences for my students, and will enable my students to make much more informed decisions and take action to prevent poor physical health, the negative effects of stress, and high-risk behavior that could result in teenage pregnancy.

Please give my students this opportunity to learn choose healthier paths to adulthood. It will make a direct impact on their future success in our society.
