Room to Breathe: Creating a Safe Counseling Space for Students

My Project

As a school social worker, I work daily with high school students who face a wide range of challenges—many stemming from poverty, instability at home, and ongoing stressors that deeply impact their emotional well-being. For these students, school can sometimes feel like the only consistent and safe place in their lives.

That’s why creating a welcoming, calming counseling space is so essential.

With the right resources—such as games, snacks, art supplies, and thoughtful décor—I can provide not just support, but a true refuge. Games may seem like simple fun, but they actually help students build trust, lower anxiety, and engage more openly in conversations. Similarly, art supplies like sketchbooks, colorful pens, and even pipe cleaners give students a creative, non-verbal outlet to express emotions they may not be ready or able to articulate. These tools support emotional regulation and self-expression, especially for students who have experienced trauma or ongoing stress. Snacks offer more than nourishment—they help students feel cared for and reduce distractions caused by hunger, which is a very real concern for many of our low-income youth.

The physical environment of the counseling space also plays a critical role. Soft lighting, comforting office décor, and warm, welcoming touches help students feel safe, valued, and at ease. When students enter a space that feels intentionally created for them, it sends a powerful message: you are important, and your mental health matters. More so- this office is FOR YOU. These resources help build a space where healing begins—where students can be themselves, explore their emotions, and start to build resilience and hope for their futures.
