it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Wow! I have the most amazing 13 students. I have a special education classroom of 4th/5th-grade students. They are all unique with the biggest hearts I have ever seen. At times, my students display anger, tantrums, and feelings that they don't know how to cope with. Creating a calming area in my classroom where my students can go and relax and be able to then rejoin the class and continue with their learning is imperative. The great thing is that with the calming area in the classroom, my students will still be able to hear the classroom discussions, therefore, they will not be missing out on instruction.
My students will be able to go to the calming area when they are feeling frustrated, angry, anxious, annoyed, or just need a break.
Within the calming area, they will be able to sit on a bean bag, read books about different feelings, use different relaxing toys, plush animals, and do various art projects. Students will also have the opportunity to write about what they are feeling and maybe figure out on their own or with assistance from an adult, how they could deal with the situation if it were to arise again. The goal for the calming area is for my students to have a chance to take a break when they are feeling an emotion that they can't handle, which causes them to become disengaged in the lesson or independent work. After a given time, 10-20 minutes, students will meet with an adult in the classroom to make sure they are ready to rejoin the class.
