This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students look forward to playing recorder, but we do not have enough for our classroom. Most students cannot buy their own recorder, so I am trying to acquire enough recorders for each student in fourth grade.
I teach music to mostly English Language Learners in North Texas, kindergarten through fifth grade.
My students love the arts! I see each class in the school for forty five minutes per week, and we enjoy singing, moving, and especially playing instruments.
My Project
My students love playing music, and recorder is one of their favorite instruments. I teach recorder as an introduction to wind instruments, and recorder helps develop fine motor skills, pitch recognition, breath control, and discipline. My students in fifth grade play recorder almost daily as part of their musical instruction. My goal is to eventually have enough recorders so that each student in third, fourth, and fifth grade can play recorder in class.
My students and I have had to be creative in the ways we share our limited classroom supply of instruments, and having more recorders would certainly ease some of that burden.
Students who learn recorder will also be more prepared for and more likely to stay in band or orchestra class. These instruments, although small, open big doors for the students and help them stay invested in music and the arts!
