My Project
My co-teacher and I have taught Romeo and Juliet in our 9th grade ELA courses for years! We enjoy this unit and are constantly adding new materials and elements for the ever-changing student population we get. We are always on the hunt for new ways to make this piece of work more meaningful and impactful to young people.
By adding in the Romeo and Juliet Graphic novel, we plan to enhance our lessons on major scenes, lines, themes, and ideas presented by Shakespeare.
We will be able to build upon our previous plans while better reaching all students, both below and above grade level.
Right now we use several written versions, movie clips, and scenes from the play on stage to compare and contrast powerful scenes such as the balcony scene between Romeo and Juliet, the fight scene between Romeo, Tybalt, and Mercutio, the tragic scene in the Capulet’s Tomb, and many others. Adding in the graphic novel will give our students another visual element to analyze and compare during our studying of the play.
Our class is the ELA course all incoming 9th graders take. Many students are well below grade level. Likewise, many students are well above grade level. It is a special mix of students who are all eager to learn and feel success in their first year of high school. This graphic novel of Romeo and Juliet will allow us to better serve our amazing 9th graders.
