Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

These violent delights have violent ends. O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? I teach 7th grade English Language Arts in Chicago. The poverty rate at this school is 90.5% and many of these students qualify for free or reduced school meals. Our school provides an education for students beginning in prekindergarten through eighth grade. In addition to our diverse learners, sixty percent of our students are learning English as a new language. Students at this school need multiple and varied opportunities to use written and spoken discourse to enhance thier language development and social skills. Many of my students are in gangs and feud often because of misunderstandings.

I lack adequate reading materials to support effective language development, address human values and promote tolerance of cultural differences among my students.

Themes such as gang violence, terror and death are prevalent in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Discovering human values and important ideas about characters in this Play will encourage my students to seek alternate ways to handle disputes peaceably in their communities. This project is relevant and beneficial to my students as it promotes open dialog to explore a broad array of issues related to violence that are important to my students. Using this format, inside the classroom, students feel safe to take risk, share what they are reading and learn from one another. In addition my students also profit from engaging in exploratory conversations about text and relate what they are reading to real world situations.

Throughout the school year students are bombarded with negative media reports of gang violence and deaths. By funding this project, you will make it possible for my students to gain a deeper appreciation for human lives, increase responsibility for their own actions while enhancing thier language development skills through reading. Please consider my proposal.
