My Students

We have 14 amazing students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. Our students are vibrant, passionate, and show a perseverance over many challenges that I could never dream of.

Most of our students are non-verbal and love hands on and engaging activities but sometimes they get overstimulated.

They come to school each day ready to try new things and grow both personally and academically. They inspire me to want become a better teacher.

My Project

I am very lucky to be in a school with the space to set up a sensory room! Not only do sensory rooms support visual, auditory, and tactile processing, but they also help develop motor coordination, increase concentration, and promote positive ways to de-escalate behaviors. The use of a sensory room is needed as a daily part of our schedule in a special education classroom. Students are not able to learn their best if they are not able to take a sensory break and calm themselves.

Sensory rooms provide a safe space to calm down and self-regulate, which in turn improves focus, concentration, and class participation.

While setting up a sensory room is expensive, it is so beneficial to students! Students who return from sensory rooms are often calmer and more focused, which can improve academic success and decrease challenging behaviors. A sensory room would be a great addition to my school to assist in supporting the learning of not just my special education students, but all students!

Our administration saw a sensory room as an important need and now we need your help to fill it up with equipment geared to assist our students. We have no lighting that is effective to meet our student needs. Fluorescent lighting can be harsh to people with disabilities so turning the lights off and using a projector or use of light covers would aid in a calming environment.

Some students get excess energy out through play. The octagon tumbling mat is an excellent and safe way for our students to roll back and forth get energy and compression out at the same time.
