This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an intervention specialist at a Title I school. I spend my day working with small groups of students who are struggling with grade level concepts. I also spend time after school working with struggling students. We are always looking for new ways to present information.

Our campus has an after school program in the weeks leading up to testing which tries to review material in a new way with lots of manipulatives.

The manipulatives help the students to make connections and have concrete experiences with abstract ideas.

My Project

Research has proven that young students learn best when manipulatives and hands-on items are used in instruction. One of the most important concepts covered in kindergarten and first grade is place value.

Place value lays the foundation for all other mathematical understanding.

Students need to practice and learn about place value in multiple ways. Ten frames are one of the best tools for this concept. They help students see how we group numbers and the patterns in how numbers are written.

I am requesting sets of ten frames as well as other games and dice to reinforce place value concepts. Games make the learning fun and students are more likely to remember a concept when they have played with it, too.
