Rolling Mill Mania

Help me give my students access to this rolling mill in my jewelry and sculpture classes so they can texture and manipulate metal surfaces!

My Project

This rolling mill will dramatically improve learning in my jewelry and sculpture classes by allowing students to learn how to manipulate the surface of sheet metal to add unique textures to the metal surface. It will open up so many opportunities for experimentation and creativity in jewelry designs and metal sculptures. For example, students will be able to sandwich objects such as a leaf or fern between pieces of metal, run it through the mill and the surface of the metal will be permanently embossed with the design. The possibilities are endless.

My goals for this project are to provide students with greater opportunities for personal expression, to foster a culture of curiosity and experimentation with materials, and to introduce new approaches to creating unique textures in their artwork.

By having this tool in the art studio, students will enjoy the freedom to let their imaginations explore possibilities while they work to incorporate one of the most interesting Elements of Art & Design into their metal projects: texture.

My students are extremely creative, enthusiastic and hardworking. Many of the students who take my classes have 504 plans, IEP's, or just feel disengaged with academics in general. Others struggle with social and emotional challenges. For many students, the art classes at my school provide a welcome bright spot in their day where they can think differently, use their hands and their minds, lose track of time, and just be present. Many students have also felt left out when the wood shop, metal shop, and auto shop classes were closed in favor of more technical and computer based electives. My room is where some of these students have found a home and I would love to make it the best room imaginable for them.
