This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At our K-5 school, 460 students spend their days learning in both English and Spanish. Our K-2 classrooms are full inclusion, meaning all our youngest learners work and grow together, no matter their learning needs.
We need math tools that work in two languages: regular 6-sided dice, blank dice we can write on for activities in English and Spanish, 10-sided dice for place value work, and double-sided counters.
These simple materials can transform a math lesson in ways worksheets never could.
When kids get their hands on real math tools, learning happens. Last week, a first grader finally understood addition by rolling dice and moving counters. His face lit up when it clicked. And our fourth graders got so excited practicing multiplication with dice games - they didn't want to stop when math time was over.
Having materials students can touch and use makes a huge difference when they're switching between languages throughout the day. One minute they're counting in English, the next they're solving problems in Spanish. These concrete tools help bridge that language gap.
These materials won't just sit in a cabinet - they'll be out on desks, in small groups, and in hands every day, helping our students build math confidence in both languages. From kindergarteners just learning to count to fifth graders tackling probability, these tools will make math real for every single student.
