I am a huge fan of the Mildred Taylor's series of books about the Logan family. Even though the book is typically read in 6th grade, I use it to push my students into a writing style that is more challenging than they are used to. At the end of the unit, my students always run to the libraries and bookstores to get the other books in the series. I use Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry to teach my students about many topics including the genre of historical fiction, the Jim Crow laws, and sharecropping to name a few. I use the book as a model for the students who will choose their own historical fiction novel and present an oral report to the class as part of their book report. As we read the novel, the class will create a 3 dimensional wall of the Night Riders, to summarize the key points of each chapter. These are just some of the activities that the class will participate in as we read this book. I teach two classes of about 30 students each so the books will service twice as many students.
