Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from an large urban area in Connecticut and are an extremely diverse population of students, with families from countries around the globe. Many of our students are English Language Learners for whom English is a second language, and over half of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
Our school is a true melting pot of students with cultural backgrounds from near and far, which makes our school so great!
Our students have backgrounds from approximately 40 different countries around the world...we are a fantastic mixture of cultures and backgrounds!
My Project
Put a group of 7th graders into a room and ask them to brainstorm ideas for a fundraiser...their idea? Of course, a school store!
Seventh grade entrepreneurs at my middle school have developed and organized a school store.
With my support, these 7th grade scholars have come up with a supply list, begun to purchase supplies, and designed signs. They are beginning the process of signing up to work at the school store. What we are missing is the actual store. We need something that can be portable as well as store the items.
By running the school store, the students will learn to understand entrepreneurial thinking and basic business concepts related to starting and maintaining a business. By signing up to work "shifts" at the school store, students will learn responsibility of having a "job" as well as the importance of being reliable. They will learn the art of persuasion by advertising with signs and announcements. By interacting with their peers, they will learn customer service skills; by taking inventory each day, they will become familiar with real life supply and demand; by coming up with the prices on their own, they will calculate our profits and determine what will be most profitable for the store.
My students need a rolling cart to launch their 7th grade school store. Students have done all preparation for the school store: researching what is the best thing to sell, calculating how much each item should cost and how much profit we will make from each item. They have designed signs and are planning to make announcements during morning announcements as well as during lunch. With this cart, students will be able to run their store in the lobby of the school, but still store the items safely in my classroom.
