Rodeway To Reading Part 2

"We are worth every bit of time that you spend with us". This is what all of my students ought to be thinking. As the school Speech-Language Pathologist, I see my students at a far lesser frequency than their classroom teachers. I want to be sure that the time spent with them is worthwhile and meaningful. My students range from 9th to 12th graders. Our school is a large rambling old school that lacks many of the basic necessities that high school students should have.

The majority of the students at this school come from low income families and unfortunately, have had an inferior elementary and middle school education. They come to us lacking in many of the basic reading skills needed to successfully complete a college preparatory education. By the time they get to us, their deficits seem insurmountable to overcome.

Sessions that I spend with my students are meant to focus on the specific language limitations that are holding them back from performing adequately in the classroom. The "Words Their Way" series, which was received in the first part of this grant request, has been used to assess and compile data on the specific reading/literacy deficits of the students. I have also used the series to provide the students with word sorting activities that are designed to improve their reading deficits. The "Let's Read" books, also received from the grant, have been used to extract materials for practicing oral decoding and reading at specific instructional levels for each student. Only 5 of these books were purchased in the first grant. However, many more of my students would benefit from having their own "textbook" with which they can take home and keep for on-going homework and practice.

Your help would help prepare our leaders of tomorrow. These students will be more likely and better prepared to enter the world of college, skilled trade or other meaningful professions. The better educated our students become, the better their ultimate outlooks for their and our futures.
