Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.
My Project
My students are in 4th and 5th grade, but read at the kindergarten or below level. The books we have in our classroom library have been collected over the years through donations from libraries, retiring teachers, and various organizations' donations to the school. Most of the books are way too high for my students' reading levels. The books that are more to their level are Dr. Seuss, and students at their ages do not want to feel like babies reading Dr. Seuss.
My students have learned to love reading, and I don't want them to lose that love because the books we have don't keep their interest.
I have looked at the books they check out from the school library, and while the topics aren't quite age appropriate, they aren't "baby books," as they call them. They love this type of book, and I believe they would read more in class if they had more access to these books.
Our bean bag chairs are also in need of new covers due to wear and tear. I want a beautiful new library to continue to foster the love of books that my students have. These items can help!
