My Students
What better way to learn about rocks and minerals than to actually be able to touch, feel, see and experiment with them yourself.
I teach the Alternative Learning Environment classroom at a high poverty school in Arkansas.
My students are 7th to 12th graders who for various reasons (not only discipline) are not in regular classrooms. To most of my students it seems as everyone in the school district had given up on them, except me. I try to encourage them and push them to open their mind and do their best no matter what. Some of my students learn better by actually doing and seeing the lesson than just reading about it.
My Project
I am requesting mineral kits and rock kits so that my students will be able to touch, see and conduct all the investigations on mineral properties such as luster, streak, and hardness. Having a mineral and rock kit would give the students the opportunity to test minerals and rocks for themselves. I also requested critical thinking and comprehension cards that go along with rocks and minerals to use in order to tie science to language arts/English. My request also includes expo markers in various colors to put notes and lessons on the white board.
Most of these students have never been out of our area and some maybe never will.
These materials would give them a chance to experience hands on minerals and rocks that they may never see any where else.
