My students need 8 well organized, good sized rock collections to identify and describe common rock and mineral types.

I WANT MY STUDENTS TO GET ROCKS IN THEIR HEADS!
I teach 9th grade Earth/Environmental Science classes who are less than motivated. Because this is not an EOC subject, it is not well resourced at my school. Being able to take part in a "hands on" activity will greatly increase student interest and the "wow factor" that I can bring to two weeks of classes.
ROCKS ARE BORING! My students can't relate to rocks and minerals, and therefore can't imagine why its important to know about or understand them. I want to SHOW them some common rocks and minerals and SHOW them why they may be interesting and useful.
My classes need 8 well organized mineral/rock collections so that they can SEE and HANDLE some common rocks and minerals. Ideally, the samples would be as large as possible - SIZE MATTERS.
If educators can't "hook" freshmen science students, particularly those that aren't overly interested in the first place, the chances of them losing their way increase dramatically. You can help inspire students not just to understand rocks and minerals, but to be better students and participate more actively in their education.
