My Students
Instead of having rocks in our heads, our students have rocks in our hands...extraordinarily rough rocks!
Our science storage closet is literally bursting with rocks and minerals samples, most of them in their natural, rough-hewn state.
This project, "Rocks and Rolls", aims to unlock the science wealth, and potential luster, of these rocks and mineral samples.
When is a rock not just a rock? When it shines like a polished diamond, flashing all of its mineral value for every student to explore!
My Project
What is the true impact of this project? Sparking enthusiasm for geology!
Polished diamonds and precious gems are fine for some few people, but these necessary materials will reveal the otherwise hidden elements that make up minerals and rocks.
See a yellow streak in a polished gemstone? That's sulfur! And that lustrous orange stone is feldspar...look how it captures the light!
Really, this project is about our students, scientists smoothing out rough edges and misconceptions about geological samples. We learn, all of us, to roll with the changes, and to take quality time to polish our skills, all of them.
