My students are amazing children who are kind-hearted and brilliant. Many of my students are bilingual and speak English as a second language. Our class is inclusive, accepting, and diverse. We have students who speak a variety of languages (Chinese, Vietnamese, Russian, Spanish, Tigrinya, and English). Some have neurological disorders, while some are typically developing. Despite the many qualities that make my students unique, they are all a part of our classroom family. They work together, learn together, and grow together.
Most of my students come from families that struggle with socio-economic hardships.
Despite this, they are eager to be at school; parents tell me their children even cry when they have to miss school for illnesses. I want my students to feel like our classroom is a home away from home.
My Project
The books I selected are thematically paired stories. Each week when I read aloud to students I choose a particular theme to get them pumped up for learning. For example, during the week I will read stories that focus on kindness. I have carefully selected two books that we will read and compare all week. I chose high-interest topics like: planets, kindness, spiders, and more. These engaging topics will engage my students. I hope to captivate them while encouraging their brains to compare and contrast while making meaningful connections. Reading is a great way to encourage active participation in class.
