Rocking Out Math with Our IXL Leaderboards!

Help me give my students incentives for math lessons completed on IXL.

My Project

Our teaching team has approximately 160 amazing students. Out of these 160, typically about half of these are deficient or below grade level in math. In efforts to have all my students attain growth, our teaching team is supplementing classroom instruction with IXL.com. IXL is a computer program that works with each child on grade level work and it also creates a personal learning plan for each student based off of their fall math NWEA MAP test. This allows every child accessibility to math. IXL is also linked to our Illustrative Mathematics Curriculum and gives the students a digital platform to grow. This program is beneficial to all students including those below, at, or above grade level. IXL also makes it easy to implement and achieve IEP math goals for special education students. Lastly, I have several English Language Learning students who can be supported in their home language to learn math on IXL.

I want to incentivize our students with silicone (croc style) shoe charms, multicolor ballpoint pens, lanyards, and silicone bracelets so they earn something as they complete their lessons.

Our students enjoy working on IXL and they are expected to be proficient on a minimum of 2 lessons each week. Incentives are needed to help our children meet this goal and keep the momentum going. Middle schoolers like to collect items and the rubber charms are easy to wear on a bracelet, a laced up shoe, or on their Crocs. Five lessons every two weeks and you earn an incentive such as a cool pen, silicone bracelet, lanyard, or shoe charm.

Lesson completion appears to be directly correlated to improved test scores and growth. The lessons complement classroom instruction, as well as, help students with below and above grade level content.
