My students come from a variety of backgrounds. They are very diverse, as our school services a coastal area that is rapidly growing and changing. Many of my students come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of them come to school with few educational experiences other than what they receive within school walls and with concerns to meet everyday needs.
This is my first year in the Gifted and Talented classroom and I want to give these students a year to remember.
Deep and critical thinking is my overall goal in this classroom this year! This unit on roller coasters and amusement parks will supply the students with a wonderful story to connect to, but also a STEM activity to bring the roller coasters to life.
My Project
My students are engaged in units of study throughout our time together in Gifted and Talented. These two things will engage the students in literacy while challenging their brain in a STEM activity of building a roller coaster! We are interested in building roller coasters while reading a novel about a little girl who runs away to live at her favorite amusement park. The connections between these two materials will have the students so excited and ready to learn! I look forward to diving in to this amazing story while connecting the book to their STEM activity.
