Do broken instruments play broken music?
I am an elementary music teacher in a poor community. The majority of my students qualify for free lunches and come from homes that are not able to provide frivolous purchases such as instruments. We have a strong desire to see our students succeed in reading and math, so we have a desire to expose students to the arts.
Recorders are a pre-band instrument that I use in my classroom to help students learn many different things. They not only learn to play an instrument, but also how to use aural skills, critical thinking skills, fine motor detail and how to work in a group. Our recorders are several years old, and about half of them have been super glued together to retain some functionality.
My students are in desperate need of new recorders to continue their interest in music. We want to provide the best education possible for our children. It is demeaning to them to expect them to excel with broken and unusable equipment. We are also in need of sterisol to clean the recorders properly and reduce the transfer of germs from one instrument to another.
Your contribution to this grant will allow for each of my students to have a new, perfectly functioning recorder. Your generosity teaches these children that people do care and how important it is to give back to the community.
