Kinesthetic, oral, visual - these are the ways students learn. Computer technology is a great way to address some of these learning modes. However, technology comes in many forms and while we have a decent computer lab, the opportunity for hands-on technological applications is sorely lacking.
All our elementary school-aged students are a polyglot of diverse cultures, backgrounds, and of economic means.
They come together with the same challenges and needs as those at any other major urban school system. While I consider our school an oasis in this environment, we lack some essential tools that will enable them to meet the highly technological advances that will most certainly confront them as they matriculate through the system and be required of them to know if they choose to attend college.
My Project
Imagine your own child coming home after school, out of breath with excitement, because they did something out of the ordinary, something that met state academic standards, and motivated them perhaps to think about pursuing a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (better known as STEM subjects). Building robots in collaboration with peers and learning their myriad functions and purposes could forever change their lives.
With your donation and subsequent purchase of these robotic kits/materials will not only allow me to expand our technology program to meet the core STEM standards, but especially provides greater opportunity for students to think more critically and out of the box, empower them through peer support and collaboration and most importantly increase their self-esteem through such hands-on, collaborative learning.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
