"I'm an amazing singer." claims a kindergartner as they march into my classroom. What a statement! How many of us as adults would proudly announce that? I have the pleasure to work with around 650 kindergarten through fifth grade students at an elementary school rich in the arts. My students are enthusiastic learners who take pride in their knowledge and musical ability. They are excited to grow their musicianship and explore new concepts every time they step into my classroom.
My Project
Rockin' Rhythm Centers are a chance for my kiddos to explore and create rhythms in small groups. These small groups really help students to work cooperatively to understand the feel for how long a note/rest lasts and how to use them to create their own music. To keep things interesting and allow students as many opportunities to interact with notes/rhythm patterns it takes a lot of creativity and resources.
With the addition of Floor Toms and NoteKnacks we will be able to continue growing our musicianship and rock these rhythms.
Third graders will be able to compose rhythm patterns using the NoteKnacks in 2, 3, and 4 time signature; a benchmark we are just beginning to work on. 5th graders could extend this activity by adding melody to the rhythms they have composed using NoteKnacks and then perform their piece on recorder.
In Kindergarten we will be able to use the Floor Toms to start playing simplified picture rhythms. I know that my students from Kindergarten-5th grade will be inspired by these new rhythm resources.
