This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

During the difficult times of Covid-19, the most refreshing thing a teacher can see is their students smile. My students have come to this school year with several strikes against them, i.e. language barriers, poverty, social distancing and mask wearing just to name a few. Yet they still come to school smiling and eager to learn. Their excitement and thirst for knowledge encourages me to share my love of music even more everyday.

My Project

This year has presented added challenges on top of the given Covid challenges. Our school added 5th grade back into the elementary school setting. In years past, prior to Covid, I had enough recorders to be able to have two classes practice recorder for the day. I would then need to clean the instruments each night. I now have three classes that need recorders daily.

After spending a year learning music either "a la cart" or virtually, my students are excited about getting to play instruments in music class again!

With these instruments, we will be able to perform music without the fear of sharing germs between students. Each student will be assigned an instrument that ONLY THEY will be using. The instruments will still be washed nightly, but will be able to have more time to air out between uses. Having instruments assigned also allows for students to display their "Recorder Karate Belts" around their instrument, which encourages students to practice and show off their music skills.
