Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have a driving passion for music, and would love to play instruments of their very own.

My students live in a high poverty city, and they can hardly afford food at times, let alone an instrument.

The public school that they attend is one of the biggest, and it sits in one of the poorest sections of the city. They all would love to make something of themselves, but many have little hope of ever getting out of the cycle they and their parents are in due to their poverty. Music has been one of the subjects that they can all relate to, are all very talented in, and in which they would all like to excel. Giving them each a recorder of their very own would not only give them ownership of something physically, but their passion for music would only soar to greater heights.

My Project

These recorders will fulfill a great need in the school. Currently there are just over 100 recorders for the 450 students that come to music each week. With more recorders, we will not have to worry about sharing, or about germs being spread. No matter how carefully we sanitize the recorders, it will be difficult to eliminate all potential germs, and so the few that we have will be handed out. The more recorders we have, the more music-making will take place. Recorder is a very accessible instrument, and it would connect well with my students' beginning understanding of composition. I would love to see them one day be able to write a piece for recorder and then perform it in class. For the eighth graders who are graduating this year, it would be a joy to be able to give them the chance to play an instrument - something they've never had the opportunity to try in their schooling to this point - and potentially even keep it at the end of the year.

My students are some of the forgotten poor of our country, and yet there is a lot of potential for success in each one.

I would love to tap into that potential and see how far they can go. For the oldest students, I want them to see that there are reasons to continue schooling, and for the younger students, I'd like them to be engaged and inspired through music to excel in other areas of academia as well. Music saved me in school, and I hope it will do the same for each of them. Thank you.
