Rockets, Racecars, & Research: We LOVE Math & Science!

My students need rockets, racecars and research supplies for BIG TIME math and science learning.

My Students

Our school is into math and science! We have a three-time award winning math team and an awesome new science curriculum! Our students are all eager and excited for any and all things math & science!

Our inspirational quote this year is, "Failure IS an option here; if things are not failing, you are not innovating enough."

Using new science, engineering and math materials like rockets, racecars and robots to learn math and science will motivate our kids to continue their learning outside of the regular school day. We have several Sphero robots and are hoping to get more. We have experienced firsthand that using robots to teach math and science creates a safe environment for children to fail and then to learn from failing. We will continue to incorporate robots into our learning as we add these additional materials.

With the help of this grant, we hope to add rockets, racecars and research materials to our learning and begin a summer learning opportunity for students. This program will be designed to grow math and science motivation and prevent the summer slip.

My Project

We have a growing interest in extra curricular math and science activities at our school and in our community. It would be a monumental addition to our after school math team that currently meets on Thursday’s after school to have these materials to combine math and science extension activities. The materials would also provide the opportunity to add additional students as well as continue this club throughout the summer holiday.

The materials that I have chosen will combine and cover a multitude of elementary math standards across all domains with the new NGSS standards across elementary grade-levels.

The NGSS focus areas include: motion and stability, ecosystems, energy, engineering design, and matter and its interactions and the three dimensions of science learning: crosscutting concepts, science and engineering practices, and disciplinary core ideas.

There are 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice currently: 1.) Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 2.) Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3.) Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others 4.) Model with mathematics 5.) Use appropriate tools strategically 6.) Attend to precision 7.) Look for and make sense of structure 8.) Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning that can be used flawlessly throughout this model of exploration and learning.

I have specifically focused on purchasing the materials to enhance instruction for grade-levels 3-5, as they will allow me to differentiate and extend the learning for our afterschool math and science club kids.
