Rocket Girls and Boys: Igniting a Passion for STEM.

My students need safety equipment for working with hands-on science experiments. We also need model rockets, launch pad equipment, and an altitude finder.

My Students

How can we learn about rockets without any rockets?!! Sure, we could read a book, label a diagram, or even watch a video; but how do you really ignite a student's passion for science, engineering, math and tech? With a "hands-on, real-life, light-the-ignition-and-watch-it-soar-into-the-sky" rocket.

These students attend a full-time gifted class in an urban, public school district with 60% of its students on free and reduced lunch.

There are certain challenges that sometimes come with being a gifted child. Our theme this year is failure. This may sound strange but, more often than not, these students paralyze themselves with perfectionism, fear of failure, or of not being smart enough. Believe it or not, focusing our intercurricular studies on rocketry is helping us overcome our fear of failure. Who has had bigger failures than NASA? But the reason they had colossal failures, was because they were taking colossal risks -they were trying to do something that had never been done before. They also learned from their mistakes. Instead of giving up when they failed, they took the attitude of that didn't work, let's try something else. More than anything, I want my students to embrace taking risks in education, and learning from failures rather than fearing them.

My Project

With these resources I will be able to conduct hands-on science experiments pertaining to rocketry. I can't wait for the students construct their own thermal heat shields to keep their returning space vehicle safem test them, revise based on their results, and try again! This year my students will use free, on-line software to test their own rocketry/engineering ideas in a rocket simulation where they can predict the speed, height, and flight time for their rocket creation. Then, we can actually construct rockets, engineer them to our liking, fly them and compare our results using trigonometry! Just picture a beautiful morning: the wide, green playground dotted with a school-full of students, parents, community members all watching the launch-pad as Emily proudly prepares her rocket for launch. The other students have their clipboards ready to record data. 3,2,1 the crowd goes wild. Emily glows.

These are gifted students.

They have a natural passion for learning, and will be life-long learners because of that passion. The incredible thing that I have seen happen is that a student can stumble upon a subject in school at a very young age, and absolutely fall in love with the topic -and it changes a life. I can easily see these students falling in love with rockets, or aerodynamics, or engineering, or science, or math, or technology, and changing their lives.
