This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 5th graders in an urban school. They are now entering their sixth year in a dual-immersion language program, through which they are attaining proficiency in two languages, English and Spanish.

My students are determined to overcome any obstacles they face in life.

The school neighborhood is in an area of high poverty, and 90% of the students in this class entered school with a primary language background other than English. However, my students will not let their circumstances label them as disadvantaged learners. They continue to make the best of the opportunities they are presented. As a result, they will finish their elementary school career with a strong academic background in not just one, but two languages!

My Project

These materials will give my students the opportunity to investigate chemical reactions that produce gas when specific substances are mixed together. My students will work in teams to quantify the amount of fizz that is produced in the chemical reactions as well as to identify what happens when they change certain variables in their investigations. They will then complete various engineering challenges that utilize what they learned in the investigations.

Chemistry has been the most highly anticipated STEM concept this year, and this project will not disappoint!

Once my students discover that mixing certain substances together will produce ​gas, they will refine their discoveries to align with real-world inventing scenarios. These scenarios will involve building rockets that are propelled by the gas produced in a chemical reaction, making bath bombs that bubble, and creating candies that fizz when eaten.
