Glasser said, "We Learn 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we see and hear, 70% of what we discuss, 80% of what we experience, 95% of what we teach others.” With this in mind, I have created lots of hands-on activities for my students.
I have about 45 freshman per period who love (and learn best from) hands-on-activities.
Each year I am scrounging for school supplies. If I see a paperclip in the hallway, I stop to pick it up! It is very difficult for a classroom of forty-five children to share ten pairs of scissors and half a dozen glue sticks. These classroom supplies are essential and are sadly not provided by the school; Most of the parents cannot afford to provide these supplies either.
I also have social leaders in our Student Problem Identification and Resolution Improvement Team (S.P.I.R.I.T.) and students in our Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) yearning to make a difference, however, they need basic supplies to help them create posters, fliers, and banners.
My Project
In the personal health unit students will create time-lines to share important life events that have transpired. In the mental health unit they will make 3D mental health posters on various mental disorders. In the nutrition unit they will make food guide pyramids. In the drug unit they will create mobiles on various drugs. And in the human sexuality unit they will make models of body parts with anatomical and physiological labels.
Every child deserves the opportunity to use school supplies in the classroom.
Creativity broadens the mind. Your generosity will ensure that my students continue to learn through hands-on activities.
