My Students
We are a first-grade French immersion class on the West Side of Los Angeles. Our program is one of only two French Immersion programs in LAUSD. Our kids are diverse, funny and smart. They work as a family to make their classroom a special place, and you can help us!
We need some classroom basics.
Things like glue sticks and paper are consumed quickly in my class because I believe it is important for children to have the materials to express themselves. My children are great artists and creators and they need some more basic supplies.
Our kids this year come from diverse backgrounds. We have kids with families from all over the world! At our school, we don't just speak French. We also speak English, and lots of us speak Spanish, Farsi, Mandarin, Dutch, Afrikaans, and many other languages! We celebrate diversity in our class.
My Project
When kids finish their work in my classroom, they are allowed to read, draw, or do free math. You would be amazed by how many different things they create: origami, letters to friends, books, cards for mom and dad, structures and vehicles. It's always a surprise when you give a kid some freedom and ample supplies. We also like using these supplies for projects involving Writing, Poetry, and Storytelling.
Fostering a sense of creativity is important for the growth of young people.
These days, it can be tough to get more art in the classroom, which is why I try to make time to do it as often as we can. All of our supplies are found around the room, and the kids don't have to ask me for permission to use them. I find this fosters a sense of independence and self-agency, and prepares them to solve problems and be self-reliant when they grow up.
