My Students

Do you remember how fun it was to collect rocks when you were a child? Well, so do my 3rd grade students! My students would be ecstatic to discover and explore a collection that is beyond their wildest dreams at our local and infamous Rocks and Minerals Museum.

I am a 3rd grade teacher in a high poverty school in the Northwest.

With nearly 85% of our students on free and reduced breakfast and lunch, our students rarely get to venture outside of the classroom, much less outside of the city. There is also a wide range of diversity in our classroom, with 9 different native languages being spoken by all 27 of my students. Despite the challenges of their home lives, all of the students are kind, hard-working, and they have a tremendous desire to learn.

My Project

Our 3rd grade team would like the opportunity to take our students to the Museum of Rocks and Minerals. Each year, as a part of our 3rd grade science curriculum, 3rd graders study and learn about rocks and minerals. They will learn about the three different types of rocks and how to conduct tests to identify different minerals. By taking a field trip, the students will be able to see first-hand one of the greatest collections of rocks and minerals in the Pacific Northwest. The students will also be able to see the largest opal-filled thunderegg in the world, dinosaur eggs and fossils, and an extensive meteorite collection. During this field trip the students also get to watch a video, handle different rocks, minerals and fossils and take their own rock home. It would allow them to see and touch more rocks and minerals then they could even imagine. This hands-on experience would be a tremendous supplement to our curriculum and it would help solidify the students' learning in our classroom.

With budget cuts and lack of funding, field trips are a rarity in our school.

This field trip would not only be a great resource for learning, but it would provide an amazing, one of a kind experience for our students. Please help us to get this field trip funded, so that my students can explore the joy and wonder of earth science!
