Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At The Learning Community Charter School in Central Falls, RI, we constantly look for opportunities to enrich our students' experiences. We are a growing school, though, and we do not yet have an art or music program. We are therefore creative with the times we do have, and try to integrate the arts and music wherever possible. We see lunchtime as a great enrichment opportunity.
When you go to a restaurant, or often times in your own home, you may listen to music as you eat. We would like to offer this same privilege to our students, capitalizing on lunch as a time to play different sorts of music for our students to enjoy. We would like to expose our students to many genres of music throughout the school year, as they eat.
We have already started playing music during lunch time, but we have an old boom box that has poor quality sound, which does not reach all parts of the dining room. My first grade students appreciate this opportunity to dance in their seats and sing along, but our technology does not allow them all to participate. I am requesting a stereo system for our dining room, so that our students can hear a diverse collection of music over the course of the school year. We hope to broaden their exposure to different music styles, giving them an opportunity to different countries, and through time. With this program we hope to move away from the chaos that cafeteria style dining can sometimes become, to a calmer and more balanced atmosphere of healthy nutritional habits, good table manners and a warm and inviting dining environment.
By granting us a new stereo system, you will expose our students to a diversity of music styles and genres that they don't otherwise have access to. You will also help us to foster a calm dining environment that allows our students to talk at a volume with their neighbor appropriate for dining time, notice when they are full, and eat a balance of items.
