Robots: More Than Toys, They're Teaching Tools!

My students need scientific tools in order to measure force and motion.

My Students

My students' academic experiences vary widely, and this can be problematic. I teach at an alternative school where many of the students have experienced a variety of educational settings. Prior to transferring to my program, some attended traditional schools, some were enrolled in private schools, and many have been home-schooled. This disparity means that my students rarely come to me with comparable knowledge and skills. So, I must always differentiate my instruction.

However, all of my students want to learn!

That is what I love about my school. The kids are not forced to attend here; they choose to attend here because they believe they will be content and successful in our school. It's great!

My Project

The State of Washington decided to make Robotics a "lab science" credit for high school students. Until now, my robotics classes have only counted as an elective or a technology credit.

Turning my class into a lab science will require me to make some major changes, because, until now, my robotics classes have been primarily "experiential" learning.

Except for some basic instruction in gear systems and Robot C programming, I have allowed my students to simply design and build robots. The quality of their creations was evidenced by how well they performed in local competitions.

Now, I must incorporate lessons in energy, force, and motion, and the sensors provided by this DonorsChoose grant will allow the students to measure the velocity, frictional forces, and pulling and pushing capabilities of their robots. Their "toys" will become STEM teaching tools! The specific sensors I would like to make available to the students can be attached to TI-Inspire calculators to collect and analyze data. For example, the Go!Motion sensor emits an ultrasonic signal which will bounce off any solid object and return. By recording the amount of time it takes for the signal to make this round trip, the students can determine the distance their robots travel over time in feet per second. Additionally, by tethering a robot to a stationary object (like a heavy table) using the Vernier Force sensor, the students will be able to measure the pulling capabilities of their robots in Newtons. These measurements will allow the students to see how simple design and engineering changes, i.e. altering gear ratios or robot mass, can affect these measurements.
