My Students

My classroom is an elementary school library. All students in the building, kindergarten through fifth grade, come to the library each week to check out books, do research, and learn technology skills. My school is located in Port Orchard.

We have over 450 students at our school that visits the library weekly.

Our school population has over 40% of our students are eligible for the free and reduced-price lunch program. All students are equal when it comes to learning and all of my students deserve every advantage I can give them.

My Project

The materials chosen for this project will allow my students to not only practice their coding skills, but it will allow them to see a finished product. My students begin the year doing some coding on the computer. There is a lot of excitement about coding. Although they are excited about coding most of my students do not understand that what they program into the computer will actually decide how something works or moves. Since we are a high poverty school my students do not have the opportunity to get to use this type of technology. In a technology-rich world, it is important for my students to have the same opportunities as other students at other schools.

The Dash Robot is a fun and exciting way for students to learn the basic steps of programming.

Students first use a tablet (that we are fortunate enough to have here at our school) to program the Dash Robot. Then the Dash Robot moves the way it was programmed. The Robot is an important next step for students to see how coding or programming works in the real world.
