This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach children in a low-income and high poverty neighborhood in the inner city of Los Angeles. At this Title I school, 100% of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Though their economic standing has them encountering many challenges, struggling to receive an exemplary education will not be one of them as far as I am concerned.

My hope is to provide my students with the highest expectations so that they can succeed in their lives, education, and careers. To help me do that, I need resources that these students may not have readily available.

My Project

About a year ago, I had the amazing opportunity to get a STEM curriculum funded for my students; Picture Perfect STEM Lessons. One of the amazing lessons from the series had the students creating their own robots with a specific job. I was able to teach the lesson last year, and it went quite wonderfully.

However, I was unable to provide my students with enough materials to fully bring out the creative engineers I know that my students can potentially be.

This project includes National Geographic books about robots to support their research and materials such as construction paper, pom poms, pipe cleaners, craft sticks, and googly eyes to support constructing a prototype of their robots. At the end of the unit, the students will create an advertisement for their prototypes and have a presentation to market them. It's a very engaging, cross-curricular lesson where the students are able to learn a profession that they did not know was possible; a roboticist. Hopefully I will inspire future roboticist in the making.
