My Project

WHEA is located along the coast of Hawaii in a dry, hot, and windy environment. “Classrooms” are open and spacious, blending seamlessly with the outdoors to create a unique educational setting that extends beyond traditional classroom walls. Among these hands-on projects, WHEA has stayed true to its engineering roots by establishing a robotics team, FRC 3881, the Sharkbots. Our Robotics project has grown since our first season in 2011 and has inspired many engineering based projects by developing that groundwork for others. One of the ways we promote STEM is through the Malama Ka Aina tours for visiting schools. Robotics is a highlight with multiple stations covering the current/recent game, iterations and design thinking, programming and of course visitors get to drive our robots. Many schools come to visit us throughout the year, and we also visit those that can not travel to us. Our student-led presentations introduce young learners to robotics, demonstrating how we design and build our robots. The enthusiasm of the students is evident when they get a close-up look at our robot wiring, mechanisms, and drivetrain. The highlight of these presentations is letting the students take control of the robot themselves. The moment the robot comes to life, so do the passions of students who are inspired to be a part of robotics as the energy in the room shifts with eyes widening in excitement. While we can’t be certain that every student will pursue robotics, their reactions make us hopeful that some will. When we visit schools, we like to bring items that we have designed and then cut on our laser plywood cutter, ranging from iteration designs of our robot, 3d shark models, team pins and even puzzles with visiting school logos.
