Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are an extremely hardworking and curious bunch. They want to make the world a better, more equitable place. I’m a Founding Teacher at a high achieving charter school where my students put in longer hours than a traditional school. I teach one of our schools three “excellence” classes, computer science and robotics. These classes are not core-content like science, math or ELA but help students become well rounded, positive forces in their community. My goal is for students to become creators of technology rather than solely consumers. Most of my students live in East Palo Alto, a city located in The Bay Area. We are part of the Ravenswood School District, where 82% of students are Latino, 8% are Hawaiian or Pacific Islander and 7% are African American. Over 90% of our students qualify for free or reduced rate lunch and many of our students are English Language Learners.

I believe that my class is an essential vehicle for students to become part of the cutting edge developments that are occurring right in their backyard; opportunities that have historically been closed off to them.

My Project

A set of four iPads would be an extremely useful addition to my Computer Science and Robotics classroom because of the versatility of the device. Currently, students have access to Chromebooks, but these laptop computers do not have access to a majority of the design apps that tablets do, additionally, they aren’t very mobile. The iPad’s touchscreen capabilities and portability allow students to participate in more complex and engaging projects, pushing their critical thinking skills. Furthermore, the iPads allow students to input real-time data as they move to different settings to test their prototypes. Providing students with this type of access to data allows them the opportunity for instant feedback in the form of tracking data and adjusting their work in real time.

In Robotics, for instance, students use the “LEGO Mindstorms” application to program various commands for their robot.

One of the issues we came across this past year with the Chromebooks was students not being able to make real-time adjustments to their programming. With iPads, students would be able to respond to data in the moment, which would allow them to complete more challenges and experiments. With the opportunity to reiterate in a timelier manner, students will get the feel for the real iteration process engineers go through when designing an experiment or product. Getting to practice and apply the Design-Thinking iteration process will allow students to become competent and competitive innovators to and through college!
