This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a high-poverty area of Los Angeles. All of my students receive a free breakfast and lunch throughout the school year. Many of the families in this community have two-income households and, yet are still barely making ends meet.
Having a tough family life where priorities revolve around needs and not wants can make it tough for my little Kinder babies to learn and grow at home.
Being safe and having food on the table is what's the most important. There isn't much time or money to take the kids out to learn and explore.
That's where I come in. One of my primary goals throughout the year is to involve parents in learning as well. I want to "teach a man to fish." This enables parents to feel comfortable providing support in their homes and give them the tools they need. Providing opportunities at school that they can then take into their homes is crucial. Parents inherently want to help their children academically but don't always know how. Equipping them with knowledge and tools is key. I hope you support us.
My Project
The newest craze is robotics and coding. Adults and children alike are fascinated by how robots work and help us in our daily lives. Using a robot is great and teaches children about how to give directions and solve problems. I want to take things a little further. I want my little ones to actually build a robot. The Roomba will show them how robots have purpose and follow directions using applications. I will use this as a springboard to discuss what type of robots we will be building with the UBTECH Jimu Robotic Kits and what purpose they will serve. The robotics kits will give us plenty of tools and pieces to build several different types of robots. We will be learning to build and code together. The learning will stop there, though. I want to involve the parents in creating and coding the robots as well. We will showcase the robots we create through social media and have a Coding Night where parents can actually come in and watch their students use the robots they built. I can't wait to see what they come up with.
