My Students

Science is not a set of facts to be learned but is a way of exploring the natural world! Today's students need to be able to observe, explore, and engage in activities that pique their natural curiosity. Students need more opportunities to explore engineering than school budgets can provide.

I have 180 Physical Science students with a quest for knowledge.

They are a very diverse group of young teenagers, with varied socioeconomic backgrounds, with interests, aspirations, hopes and dreams. They are amazing with boundless curiosity and wonder of the world around them. They constantly amaze me with their work ethic, creativity and love of learning. We have students of all levels- from advanced to far below basic in English/Language Arts and Math. Through science, we incorporate language and math, helping all kids to be proficient in ELA, Math AND Science!

My Project

Can you imagine going to school and knowing that you will have the opportunity to build a robotic arm? That once built, you will experiment with the arm to see how different amounts of pressure affect the movement of the arm? That you will be able to use the arm to grasp and lift objects? These activities will serve as a jumping off point of all kinds of STEM engineering projects! With the T-Bot II Hydraulic Arm, students will have the opportunity to build a robotic arm and test it. My request includes an instructional DVD and enough robot arms for each class to build 6 robotic arms. Once built, the students have hands-on STEM activities to test and learn about hydraulics, pressure in fluids, motion, Newton's laws, and much more. Once students see how building and testing these arms relates to engineering, we can encourage more students to choose engineering courses and careers. With a current workforce of aging engineers, the U.S. needs more engineers to repair our infrastructure and go to Mars!

Getting students excited about learning, not just about science, or engineering, is my main focus.

Students need engaging STEM activities that foster a love of learning that goes beyond the classroom. After building robotic arms, maybe students will design new ways to transport oil and gas, environmentally sound methods to dispose of waste, ways to trap water for drought-stricken regions, or better and safer ways to fly. The prospects are endless and the future is now. Let's get started!
