I teach 5th grade girls in an after school robotics class. These 8 girls have shown that they are truly remarkable in building and programming their robot. This robotics program started last month. We had some Wedo Legos kits but unfortunately they were not complete sets. So, I decided to combine them and was able to have eight sets. These eights young girls were not exposed to robotics before so it was a new experience for them and for me.
After the second week, these girls have surpassed my expectation.
We are in living in the 21st century and girls are still behind when it come to science, math and technology but in this program girls beating the odds. These girls have been expressing their love for the robotics that many other girls have expressed their interest in joining the robotics club. Unfortunately, there is not enough sets to add any more students. I was devastated when I had to reject some students. I requested more sets but due to budget cuts no funds were available. I am hoping to receive the funds to open the door of opportunity for those who are unable to have such opportunity.
My Project
My students are exposed to X-box, smartphones, etc. but its limited to playing video games or watching videos. Their exposure to educational programs using technology and incorporating robotics is very scarce. These Legos sets will expose them to both fields. They will be able to create a robot and then program the robot by the use of technology.
The after school robotics program will enhance my students ability to incorporate technology in a creative educational way.
They will be able to think outside the box. There will be no boundaries of what to explore. When students think of educational programs using technology they automatically assume that it will be boring. This robotics program is not only educational but so much fun!
