We need to challenge the minds of our brightest students! I teach gifted classes in a high poverty area. Gifted education falls under "special education" in our state, but we receive a minuscule portion of the state funding.
Many of my students are already computer literate, and have expressed interests in learning to program and use technology for interesting projects. When surveyed, most of my students indicate that they are interested in future careers in areas such as computer programming, video game design, and other technological fields.
I've always tried to incorporate technology into our content area lessons. We have no school-provided computer systems. I have supplied some basic systems in my classroom from spare parts. Though we are encouraged to teach technology, we are given no resources in the gifted classrooms.
We spend so much time in schools focusing on the needs of those lower-level students so that we can meet the scores needed on standardized tests, we often neglect or push aside those bright students. Without the added challenges, these kids could lose motivation and eagerness to learn in school.
In order to stimulate their eager minds, I believe the robot kits will give them a great enrichment opportunity. Through a study of innovations in technology, we will first learn about inventions in technology and then use the robot kits to create our own robotic innovations.
Your donation will make it possible to challenge the minds of the brightest kids in my school. The lessons and building experience will give them a taste of their future in technological fields. This project will be and exciting challenge for my students and will help to keep them motivated to learn.
