My Students

Hello my name is Jill Robbins, and I am a first grade teacher at Washington Shores Elementary. I have mixed ability classroom, in which my students struggle in one area or more. It is my desire to help build fluency and comprehension through this project to help them excel to the next level.

My students are a group of urban kids, who live in one of the roughest areas of Orlando.

They are subject to unnecessary violence, murders, and robberies each and every day. As a member of their community, I want my students to be able to take flight and soar to their own path of success. My goal for them is college readiness, and cultural awareness. When they come into my classroom, I just want them to find a place of love, serenity, joy, and hope of a better future. I let my students know that there is life beyond the streets, and the decisions you make right now, even in the first grade, will determine your forever!

My Project

These materials: five tablets, headphones, and reading and math software will help create fluency and comprehension stations that will be used to enhance skills necessary to succeed in second grade. Much of our assessment is technology based and without access to technology at home, my students are at a great disadvantage in seeing academic gains. My students will use the tablets to connect to technology across the school. We have access to scholastic sites, textbooks online, and reading and math programs as well. My students can get a head start in the technologically advanced world in which we live in, if they have the opportunity to interact with it right now.

These tablets will improve retention to attention based assignments, give incentives to go beyond grade level thinking, and extend into higher order thinking.

It will build upon the skills needed to not only survive, but to thrive in second grade and thereafter. It is my hope that this project will not only excite them about learning, but to incite the successful learner within. Thank you for your consideration in helping my Robbin Birds take flight!
